When did you last make something with your hands?

Get off your phone and make something.

Most of us end the day with nothing to show for it. No object. No evidence. Just a screen history.

Weaving is the opposite of that. You sit down, you work, and an hour later there's something real in front of you that wasn't there before. Something you made, that only you could have made exactly that way.

It's creative, meditative, and — fair warning — pretty hard to stop once you've started.

Corrin McNamara has been weaving for years. She'd love to show you how.

Weaving found Corrin the same way it finds most people — slowly, then completely. She now teaches it in small groups, either from her own studio in Northcote or at venues in Richmond and Alphington.

Her classes are hands-on from the first hour. No watching, no waiting — you're at a loom making something from the moment you sit down. Students arrive nervous and leave wanting to buy one.

Not sure where to begin? Here's how most people do it.

  • Step 1: Try it first

One evening. Three hours. $75. You'll walk away having made something on a real loom — and knowing whether you want to go further. No experience needed, everything provided.

  • Step 2: Learn it properly

Over six Tuesday evenings, Corrin takes you from absolute beginner to confident weaver. You'll leave with a real understanding of fibre, structure and technique — and a finished piece you designed yourself. Loom hire available if you need it. $460.

  • Step 3: Make it yours

You've got the basics. Now comes the interesting part. Over four Tuesday evenings, Corrin takes you into clasped weft, supplementary yarns, texture and colour — and planning projects from your own yarn stash. $300.

Got a teen who also needs to put down their phone?

In April we’re running school holiday weaving workshops for 12–16 year olds in Alphington. Small groups, all materials included and they take home something they made themselves.

Still thinking about it?

You've probably bookmarked a dozen things like this and never followed through.

This one is genuinely low stakes to try — one evening, a loom that's provided, and a teacher who's very used to beginners. The only risk is that you'll wish you'd done it sooner.

Making slowly is a choice worth making.

Every class at Workplayhouse uses natural and upcycled fibres, and teaches weaving as a practice — not just a skill. Corrin cares about preserving this craft, resisting throwaway culture, and giving people a reason to think carefully about how things are made.

If that resonates with you, you'll fit right in.
