Weaving for teens - School Holidays Workshop - Alphington

A$150.00

Join us for a fun and creative three-hour weaving workshop designed especially for teens (ages 12–16). In this hands-on session, each teen will be introduced to a rigid heddle loom, see a weaving demonstration, and then get started on their own loom that’s already prepared and ready to go.

Using colourful upcycled fabric yarn, teens will weave a length of cloth that will be transformed into a lined pouch with a zip. While the Sewing Fairy sews up the pouch, participants can add their own finishing touches, like a handmade tassel.

This session includes:

  • Use of a rigid heddle loom all warped up ready to weave

  • All supplies and yarn

  • Sewing service to finish the pouch with lining and zip

  • Take home a one-of-a-kind woven pouch to keep or gift to a friend

Each class is limited to just four participants, so everyone gets plenty of support.

  • Location: Alphington Community Centre

  • Duration: 3 hours

  • $150 per participant

  • Age range: 12–17

  • All materials included

Duration: 3 hours
Location: Alphington Community Centre - 2 Kelvin Rd, Alphington. Walking distance from Alphington train station.
Bring: Just yourself and a snack if you like. All materials will be supplied.

  • No, but it’s super helpful that you come with a curious and patient attitude.

The looms will be set up with the warp already prepared (that’s the hard bit) and then your teen can start weaving (which is the easier part) after watching all the instructions. The classes are small so there’s lots of support if needed.

  • You’ll definitely finish your piece by the end. If there’s no time for sewing, you can take home your woven cloth and make something from it yourself, or leave it with the teacher and they can sew it later and drop it off another time.

  • We’ve designed this workshop to be engaging, hands-on, and fun. Teens get to choose their own colours, work on a loom, and create a one-of-a-kind piece that’s quickly transformed into a finished pouch. The small group setting means they’ll be surrounded by others enjoying themselves, and there’s always support and encouragement along the way.

Of course, every teen is different — if your child really doesn’t want to continue, they’re welcome to step away. But in our experience, once they see their weaving come together, most are hooked and excited to finish.
