Learn to Weave Course On a 4 Shaft Loom

The workshop is one 3 hour session covering the essential foundations of weaving with yarn and a demonstration of the difference between rigid heddle and shaft weaving.

The course runs for 6 weeks and includes this session plus the remaining 5 sessions weaving on a rigid heddle loom.

Quite a lot.

Firstly both looms make cloth and the width of the loom generally dictates the width of the cloth you’re weaving.

Rigid heddle looms are much simpler and far quicker to set up and create a plain weave structure with many options to make it more interesting.

Shaft looms are next level. They require more planning, tools and take longer to set up but achieve far broader range of weave structures and patterning. It’s my personal preference but have a deep respect for both.

Think about your personality type. If you want to jump in and make without too much effort rigid heddle is for you. If you enjoy a challenge, have patience and want more control of design you’ll love a shaft loom.

Corrin’s Lojan Flex looms can convert from rigid heddle to shaft looms. The Loom+Tool Package is 30cm wide regardless. Ample width to learn on but I don’t necessarily recommend this width if you’re buying one.

Ideally you will create 2 projects. Yarn for your first project is supplied, you will provide your own yarn for the second project.

A take home text book/workbook to record your sampling, fibres, patterns and calculations.

The cost of the loom and tools is not included in the course fee. If you don’t have your own fear not, looms and tools are available to rent. Your rental package will be provided during the second session. When we begin warping, and will be returned at the end of the final session.

 An inventory checklist will be included and received upon return to ensure everything is ready for the next enthusiastic weaver. This system works on mutual trust – Corrin’s preferred way of doing things – and she kindly asks that all items are handled with care and returned on time.

Missing or damaged items may result in some seriously bad karma – and a replacement fee of up to $1600 covers the full kit and express shipping to keep things running smoothly for the next student, just like they did for you.

Please bring with you your reading glasses, pair of scissors, tapestry or darning needle, little ruler, tape measure and pen/pencil. Snacks are not provided but please bring one if you like.

Our first project will be a sampler, where we learn warping, dressing the loom, reading a weaving draft and practicing different weave structures. The second project is an item of your choice where you’ll learn about planning for your project from yarn selection to size of the piece.

Weaving is a slow meditative process that needs time to experiment and enjoy. We will hopefully make 2 items however; everyone learns and weaves at a different pace.

The focus here is less about quantity and more about understanding weaving foundation techniques and taking you to the level of weaving a quality length of cloth independently.

Please bring yourself a snack if needed. Yarn required to make your samples are included in the cost of the course. If you would like to weave additional items while you have access to a loom you’re welcome to however, extra yarn can be purchased separately.

Looms vary a lot in shape, size and complexity. This course requires a shaft table loom. Please contact Corrin to discuss.
